Happy New Year!

As we approach the end of the Autumn term and look forward to the beginning of the Spring term I wish to thank the pupils, parents, governors and staff for their work and support throughout the term.  The term will end on Friday December 20th 2013 at 1pm with a concert on the previous day with the primary schools and then the annual “Pantowaun” under the guidance of Year 12 on the Friday.  In the past weeks we held our annual Christmas celebration at St Elfan’s Church, Aberdare and once again the pupils excelled themselves under the guidance of the Music Department.  I also wish to draw your attention to a recent public speaking competition arranged by the Cambridge Speaking Union held in Cardiff where the Rhydywaun team beat teams from Howells and Glantaf, Cardiff to qualify for the next round in England.

There will be two staffing changes in January 2014.  Miss Scully has resigned from the English Department and Miss Aranwen Griffiths will join the Education Psychology Department in Anglesey.  In their place Miss Catrin Jones (Psychology) and Miss Lyndsay Horan (English) will commence in January 2014.  Recently the school banding was announced.  Rhydywaun is now a Band 3 school.  Recent improvements strongly indicate that we will rise to Band 2 by December 2014.

The school will close at 1.00 on Friday December 20th 2013 and re-open to staff and all pupils on Monday January 6th 2014.  On their return to the school, all work in the Block 3 toilets and CCTV will have been completed.

May I wish you all a Happy Christmas and New Year and I look forward to welcoming you all back on January 6th 2014.
